Watchmen...?

My roommate Melissa, Mai, John B. and I just got out of from watching Watchmen. UW held a free screening in the HUB and they are usually really fun! The line was super long and everyone was very excited, the promoters were doing a great job in pumping up the audience..I even won a free shirt!

HOWEVER, this movie was a little different...Hm..what do I have to say about that movie? Lets just say, sometime during the movie, we all fell asleep. Maybe it's because we're not hard core fans but overall, we all thought it wasn't that great of a movie. It was SUPER long (10 reels long lol = 3 hours), dragging, confusing, and kind of boring. They had a couple of action scenes here and there but it only lasted for 5 minutes, then it was dialogue for half an hour. This movie is sooooo a rental! But hey, maybe you'll like it more than we did.

Forget the rumors about Rihanna giving Chris Brown STDs! It turns out a Chris Brown received a text message from a woman while he was driving with Rihanna and that's what started the confrontation that left Rihanna battered and bruised. The text message was form a women who wrote about hooking up with CB later, but supposedly it did not trigger the argument (yeah right...)

A Slice of Our Crib & Buying In

In mine and Alana's Com495-Rhetoric & Popular Culture class we had a discussion about Hello Kitty and there was a section about Hello Kitty's projectability in the book we were assigned to read, Rob Walker's book: Buying In. The reason for Hello Kitty's success and popularity is due to her blankslate image... her expressionless face. Not only is she cute but people who are attached to her can feel what they want, feel different emotions like happy or sad with her. "...fans read a mood into her expressionless image" (155). That is the projectability of 'Hello Kitty'-- this symbol allows consumers to find individualization within Hello Kitty. Sound crazy? But this can also be said about other symbols like the Hundreds, Polo, Ecko.. "logos have meaning, and not only can that meaning be manufactured- it can be manufactured by consumers" (18). "The Hundred created a symbol that had meaning and that was cracking the Desire Code" (20) The Desire Code is what can help "[unravel] the secret dialogue between what we [consumers] buy and who we are" (xiv). why do we buy what we do?!



Another part of Walker's explanation is that we're RATIONALE THINKERS and that's part of the reason why we buy what we do, we create stories of ourselves through the things we buy and we think of reasons/excuses to get what we want and how it will represent us. (or sometimes ads trick us and make us remember things that we didn't even experience!) And that also supports why Hello Kitty is iconic, because Basically this book is attempting to explain how and why brands/products become popular in our culture and how we can't just blame ads and branding. It's also about us, our unconsciouness and our assumed "immunity to brandmarketing." So how do marketers do it, if the old commerical way is dying out?Walker talks about a marketing stunt called "murketing" (a term he made up blending the words 'marketing' & 'murky') And how this concept is what help make brands like Red Bull & Scion big success names in the business/consumer world today. Those brands kind of came out of no where right? ok ok I'm going off a tangent now, not trying to lecture... just read the book if you have time and are interested. Oh and Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell's a good one too! Ok, back to Hello Kitty.



Now i'm not going to into the history of her (which I'll add that I do know a lil somethin' somethin' cuz in my junior year of high school I did a whole presentation about Sanrio & Hello Kitty hahaha) but anyways... hate all you want, Hello Kitty is going to be part of our lives for a long time. She just grew up with us ok?

So, I'm pretty much obsessed with youtube. When I'm bored...I youtube. When I study...I youtube. When I'm with friends..I youtube. When I wanna laugh...I youtube. OK OK OK I think you guys get the point. Well, I came across this video today and thought it was HIL-ARIOUS. I have to confess that one of my guilty pleasures are trashy reality shows. I don't know, they just crack me up. So youtube + trash reality shows = One of my favorite Youtube videos. ENJOY!

working on impulse.

When you're on the brink of inspiration, determination, or suddently have a thought or idea that you have a good instinct about, it's best to act on it as soon as you can!! Even if that "act" is studying. Hmm, let's say you're in class and you're planning out your to do list like "i need to study this first and read that next and work on...." blah blah... don't put it off, JUST DO IT! because i feel like when you're mind is in that planning mode, there's drive behind it and you need to take advantage of it (no matter how big or small that impulse is) so that you don't end up dreading it or paying for it later (e.g. procrastination). do more than just talk, actually pull through and JUST DO IT. (word to NIKE)

This is especailly true for those minds whose creative wheels are spinning the fastest at the most random times like while you're walking to class, drinking coffee, driving, showering or eating a burrito. You should write about it or type it in your phone or something while you're in that MODE so you that it's fresh in your head and then later you can edit it instead of forgetting about it or trying to think of that idea again. (even if that means pushing homework/study time because i think it's worth it, plus it's meaningful to you!)

That's what I've been running on lately. Lattes to keep me awake but motivation/determination/inspiration/and other words alike (theasuarus.com would probably be a good resource) to pursue and keep up with what's going on in my head. Even though I may not be able to do those things now at least I've kept track of my goals, ideas, & things to do or want to do.

That's exactly what I did with this blog!
